With all the talk these days about UBB ( User Based Billing ) one thing I haven’t seen yet is anyone writing about User Based Billing in Northern Canada. Up here we have pretty much 1 supplier, Northwestel. I can’t think of 1 month that we have had perfect internet, no crashes not nothing. The rates quoted below are from their own website, and the only think I can say, is that there is no way it costs them $ 7.50 to send 30 gigs of information over the internet. Now, we do have the older infrastucture in Canada for our internet, the highest rates in Canada for our internet, and probably the most unreliable internet in Canada. Now while I know shipping costs up north are alot more expensive than they are down south, this really isn’t an excuse to charge what they charge up here lol.
I wrote our MP Dennis Bevington, will see if he replies, not going to hold my breath tho. We regularly go over our max cap of 30 gigs to the tune of between 100 – 150 a month, brining our internet bills to approx 180 – 230 a month. User Based Billing is alive and doing very well for Northwestel up here in Northern Canada. I am not opposed to UBB as such, but charging 4000% above what they pay for it, is pretty much like getting bent over and not kissed first. They want to charge me .50 cents a gig, hey I can live with that, consider it costs pennies a gig to send, they are still making a hell of a profit. Base it on actual download useage, so the less I use it, the less I pay, and the months I use more charge me more.then I’m all for it. Charging $ 10.00 a gig, sorry but you guys are hosing your customers, and I pray for the day there is competition up here, and you guys go out of business.
This is a copy of a message I sent Northwestel, and am doubting I will get a response.
Am sorry to hear that the recent decision from the CRTC has no impact on our Rates. After looking at Rates down south, and comparing the numbers, here is what I have found. Up here in the north we get 30 gigs max for basically $84.00. Pretty much 2.80 a gig up to the 30 gig max. Then low and behold it jumps to $10.00 a gig after 30 gigs. Thats right $10.00 a gigabyte of information. Now taking the worst case scenerio, lets say it costs you .25 cents per gig, ( thats WAY MORE THAN DOUBLE the national average,) but lets go with that, so on the first 30 gigs it costs you $ 7.50 worse case to transmit it. So you guys are making approx 1150% mark up. Hey I can live with that, you have old equipment and its more expensive, ok I can see that. Now after the 30 gigs are used, it costs you no more to send 1 gig, than it did to send that 1gb in with the normal package, but you are charging $10.00 to deliver that 1 gigabyte that cost you the original .25 cents to send. That is a 4000% percent markup. Wow, talk about USER BASED BILLING. $ 10.00 a gigabyte with no limit on how much you charge, thats worse than Rogers, Bell and Telus combined. I hope everyone that relies on your company for internet, reads this, and is as upset as I am about it. I think its time to write our MP’s and lets end this UBB.
